On a quick visit to the Columbus Museum of Art this summer to see the Picasso exhibit I always enjoy seeing Paul Freeley’s “Karnak” rising up to greet everyone at the door of the museum.

‘Wall Drawing #1240’ was created especially by Sol LeWitt, one of today’s leading artists. The wall is where the museum’s old Building and the new Knight Building interconnect.  The triangular shapes refer to the angled supports and folded forms of the glass and steel lobby, while the blocks of color echo the brick wall removed from the old south  Building.  Two drafters, assisted by six area artists, worked for five weeks to fabricate the wall drawing.

William Sommer, whose work I have recently become familiar with, painted this landscape, shortly after viewing the Armory Show of modern art in 1913.  After seeing work by Henri Matisse and other Fauve style artists, Sommer began to render his own landscapes with large areas of brilliant color and rounded, simplified forms.

The title of this work and the musical-note-shaped foliage on the tree to the left allude to William Sommer’s interest in a turn-of-the-twentieth-century idea called synaesthesia.   I enjoy the Cubist and German Expressionist influence in this 1923 painting at the Akron Art Museum.

I enjoyed seeing Richard Estes image “Food City”.  Estes is widely considered the master of Photorealism, a form of hyperrealist painting in which a photograph is projected onto the canvas as the source of the image and then painted.  My Father was a sign painter and I remember him painting grocery store ad’s very similar to the ones pictured in this image of Estes.  A great image that reflects on our consumeristic past.

I encountered a wonderful painting at the Akron Art Museum entitled “Spring Awakening” by Alma W. Thomas.  After retiring from her career as an art teacher in 1960, Thomas devoted herself full-time to making art.   It was great to find another kindred spirit artist at the Museum.

I revisited my mural on the roof of Willard Mercy Hospital when my Mother had a brief stay.  This was one of the views from her window and she enjoyed telling everyone I  created it.  The mural is based on a painting “Summer in the Firelands.”
